Between the Laughs takes us inside the minds of our greatest comedians, dating back almost 100 years-but not to find jokes or gags. Through their words, as they discuss their profession, we learn how they feel about comedy, and about each other. The greats of Vaudeville, silent and sound films, radio, TV, and stand-up have all had much to say through the decades about the art of making people laugh. As they attest, their job is not all fun and games. Here is an entertaining, educational, and thought-provoking collection of observations and opinions by legendary comedians and current favorites who, when the spotlight is off, take their comedy seriously, and who have been willing to share their knowledge, jealousies, failures, and triumphs when speaking between the laughs. Garry Berman is a pop culture historian whose previous books include Best of the Britcoms, We're Going To See The Beatles!, and Perfect Fool The Life and Career of Ed Wynn. He lives in New Jersey with his wife Karen and their two spoiled dogs.

BETWEEN THE LAUGHS OUR GREATEST COMEDIANS TALK SERIOUSLY ABOUT COMEDY AND EACH OTHER Garry Berman 9781593932756 Books

This slim volume (130 pages including index and bibliography) presented two to three sentence comments by various comedians on various topics such as Comedy as Art, The Vaudevillians, The Silent Films Comedians, The Golden Age of Talkies, The Radio Specialists, The War Years and Beyond, The Television Legends, Stand-up Comedians, and Comedians as Actors. This book needed a good editor. In many cases part of a word was missing, such as "he" instead of "the" and "Cary Grand" instead of "Cary Grant". It was an okay book, interesting to see what one comedian thinks of another. However, at $14.95 it is not worth it.

BETWEEN THE LAUGHS OUR GREATEST COMEDIANS TALK SERIOUSLY ABOUT COMEDY AND EACH OTHER Garry Berman 9781593932756 Books Reviews

I've read this book with great interest. It is rather clever in the way it takes comedians' serious thoughts about comedy. There are a number of categories to which the quotes are assigned so it flows well and makes it very easy to read. I've not heard of every comedian in this book, but I've learned a lot and have found a good new book to add to my ever growing collection. I've read every other book by Garry Berman and this one did not disappoint. But even if you haven't read his other books, check this one out, you'll be hard pushed to say there's not someone you admire quoted in this book. If you're a fan of the comedy greats, or just interested in the medium of comedy, then this is the book for you! I fully recommend it!
A fascinating and amusing read. Comments from comedians, complimenting and criticizing their idols. Flip Wilson makes a remark about professionally working on television, followed by comments from Jay Leno, Steve Allen and Milton Berle about Flip Wilson. Ever wondered what Dick Caveat, Maw West and James Agee felt about W.C. Fields? Here is your chance. Not the type of book to read from beginning to end, but rather piece meal a few pages at a time. The wit and wisdom of radio/television comedians is contained in a single volume.
